Greetings from Russia

I could have posted some photos from the huge Victory Day Parade I witnessed but then I just didn’t.

Yrjö Juhani
Portrait dating few years back. Stumbled across this while browsing through some old hard drives. I’ve had mixed feelings of this kind of photos - you know, epic light and somewhat painterly treatment in post that pushes this away from being actual photograph, feeling less honest. And yet it still does have some appeal to me. Alas, these kind of contradictions make my photographic life more interesting. And Yrjö’s got some sophisticated charisma. High-res

…Was the first thing Señor Herrera, a press photographer and a restaurant owner from Camargo asked me when he saw me carrying a camera. These are the moments when I remember how insanely privileged I am as a photographer who can enjoy the visual diversity of places like Bolivia. I’ll post some more images soon.

Central Ostrobothnia region in Finland. Forest, small villages, way-of-life-hunters and wolves. According to the hunters, the wolves have gotten way too familiar with people, so they hunted 3 of them down, only to find themselves in all sorts of trouble with the police and a dead fellow-hunter in their hands.

I was there on an assignment for Suomen Kuvalehti. The whole thing was very restricted: in the small towns where everybody knew everybody, I wasn’t allowed to photograph any people and preferably not even the houses. So I had to focus on capturing the milieu and the atmosphere of the area. The whole story can be seen here. It’s a good read, I assure you

Well, now it’s official. According to Yle the winter in Helsinki has been the darkest in last 25 years. No sun for nearly three months, they say. I love it. And there are no people in these pictures. Love it too.

Windows and balconies

After breaking my ankle I’ve been quite effectively immobilized. For the last two weeks or so, I’ve been able to exit my apartment every now and then, but it’s still impossible to use the camera if I’m not sitting down. It just doesn’t work with both hands holding the crutches. So, here’s what I shot this weekend through the windows and from my balcony. I hope it gets better after these last ten handicapped days.

P.S. I love this camera.

A dog and an elf
I’ve noticed something about dogs. It doesn’t matter where you go in the world, they always react in the same way. If you kneel, they come to you. If you raise your camera and watch them through your viewfinder, they loose the eye contact and become less interested in you (and make better models). This guy here is one important character in a short documentary me and Jarkko are making right now, so you’ll see him around. High-res
